FOREST CITY, IOWA, Jan. 30, 2019 – Waldorf University’s knitting club, Knit Wits, is once again partnering with the American Heart Association Little Hats, Big Hearts campaign to donate handcrafted red hats to newborn and prematurely-born babies. The event will run throughout the month of February. Led by Knit Wits president, Elizabeth DeYoung, last year the club was able to donate 291 handcrafted red hats.

Little Hats, Big Hearts began in Chicago in 2014 as an effort to bring awareness to a more heart-healthy nation. The event also raises awareness of congenital heart defects and what can be done to help prevent them. February is American Heart Month and during that first February, the organization donated 300 little red hats to babies born in the same month. Since 2014 Little Hats, Big Hearts has donated hundreds of thousands of hats across more than 40 states.

Waldorf’s DeYoung hopes to increase the Knit Wits donation this year and is encouraging anyone who might be interested to contact her for more information. You don’t have to be affiliated with Waldorf University or Knit Wits to participate but the group would love to meet any participants and is extending an open invitation to attend any of their gatherings held every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Waldorf University Luise V. Hanson Library. DeYoung will also have patterns, yarn and crochet hooks available for individuals who attend a weekly Knit Wits meeting.

For more information regarding donations and participation please contact DeYoung at elizabeth.deyoung@waldorf.edu or visit the American Heart Association website at https://www.heart.org/en/get-involved/little-hats-big-hearts. Handcrafted little red hats can be dropped off any time during the month of February at the Waldorf University Luise V. Hanson Library located at 106 S. Sixth St. in Forest City.
